President Donald Trump on Friday unveiled the Boeing 747 aircraft that will serve as Air Force One, a plane gifted to the Defense Department by the Qatari royal family. The unveiling ceremony took place at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where Trump descended the stairs of the newly outfitted jet to the sound of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA."

The aircraft is intended to serve as a transitional Air Force One while two new planes currently being built by Boeing are completed, expected around 2028. President Trump described the jet as "virtually double in size" to the current Boeing VC-25As, which have been in service since 1990, and declared it "the world's most luxurious plane."

This approximately 14-year-old jet, valued at an estimated $400 million, was gifted by Qatar last July and has been undergoing modifications by the Air Force in Texas since September to meet presidential transport requirements, including security and communications upgrades. The arrangement includes a provision for the plane's ownership to be transferred to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation shortly before the end of his term.

Trump highlighted a newly designed, waving American flag on the tail fin, contrasting it with the previous straight design. He also emphasized the aircraft's extended range and speed capabilities, suggesting it could fly further and faster than existing presidential aircraft, potentially with fewer refueling stops. He stated the plane is "representative of our country" and would impress international observers.

The acceptance of a foreign government's gift for presidential use has drawn scrutiny from some lawmakers and ethics experts, marking an unusual occurrence in presidential aviation history. The Defense Department formally accepted the jet from the Qatari royal family last July.

According to sources familiar with the arrangement, the plan is for the plane to serve as the primary Air Force One until near the conclusion of the current presidential term. Subsequently, ownership is slated to transfer to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation.

Air Force officials confirmed that the VC-25B bridge aircraft has arrived at the Presidential Airlift Group. Initial commissioning flights are scheduled to commence, signaling the successful delivery of a modified and secured executive transport platform.

This development provides a temporary solution for presidential air transport needs while the next generation of Air Force One aircraft undergoes its extensive manufacturing and customization process with Boeing.
