A mother and her teenage daughter tragically lost their lives at West Mersea beach in Essex on Wednesday evening while attempting to rescue a seven-year-old boy who had gotten into difficulties in the water. The child remains in a critical condition in hospital following the incident. Three other individuals were also taken to hospital.

The victims have been identified by a family member as Shally Rahman, 41, and her 15-year-old daughter, Samiha Rahman. Both were visiting the popular seaside location for a holiday trip when the incident unfolded. Police confirmed that all individuals involved in the incident knew each other.

Matiur Rahman, Shally Rahman's brother-in-law, described the family as being on a holiday trip when a large wave swept them away. Speaking from Bangladesh, he expressed the family's shock and grief, stating they are speechless and cannot comprehend the events. He remembered his niece as a "very, very good person" and his sister-in-law as "a very helpful person."

Essex Police believe the mother and daughter entered the water in an attempt to assist the young boy. Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher stated that officers are interviewing dozens of witnesses to piece together the circumstances leading up to the tragedy and appealed for anyone with further information to come forward. He commended the tireless efforts of the first responders who attempted to save the victims.

Local residents and bystanders also rushed to the water's edge to offer assistance. Among those who helped were teenagers working at the nearby Seaview Beach Diner and an off-duty paramedic walking their dog. Rita Coombs, a local resident who laid flowers at the beach, described the events as "absolutely horrific" and noted that one man was too distraught to speak about what he had witnessed.

Emergency services, including HM Coastguard and the RNLI, were praised for their rapid and professional response. Carl Powling, a local councillor for West Mersea, highlighted the swift actions of the rescue teams. His 19-year-old daughter, Leonie Powling, who works at the Seaview Beach Diner, was among the young people who assisted at the scene, attempting to find a paddleboard to reach those in distress.

The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed that despite best efforts, the deceased could not be resuscitated. A spokesperson reported that a total of four additional people were taken to hospital, with one requiring transport via air ambulance. The victims were reportedly from London, according to Essex Police.

The incident has cast a shadow over the popular holiday destination, prompting widespread sadness and a renewed focus on water safety. Investigations into the precise sequence of events are ongoing, with authorities working to understand the factors that contributed to this devastating tragedy.
