An Israeli drone strike in southwestern Syria injured several people on Saturday, according to Syria's foreign ministry, marking another incident in ongoing Israeli operations in the region. Syria's official Alikhbariya channel reported that a man was wounded when his truck was hit near the town of Beit Jinn in the western Damascus countryside.

The Israeli military confirmed the strike, stating that it targeted "a terrorist who advanced terror attacks in their final stages of preparation" and posed an "immediate threat to our forces" in southern Syria. However, Syria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned the attack in the strongest terms, calling it a "flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic and the integrity of its territory, and a blatant breach of international law."

Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent Adham Abu al-Hussam reported from the area that the strike hit a small delivery truck on the main road between Beit Jinn farmland and the town. Residents identified one of the injured as a civilian driver delivering goods, who was taken to hospital with a hand injury and is in stable condition. Residents had also reported Israeli reconnaissance drones flying over the area for four days prior to the incident.

Muhsen al-Mustafa, a security and strategic researcher at the Omran Center for Strategic Studies in Damascus, suggested the attack could be a message from Israel to the Syrian government. He explained that Israel views southern Syria as a security zone it aims to control, filling any perceived vacuum. This rationale, he noted, was also cited for a previous strike on Abu al-Duhur military airport in Idlib province, indicating Israel's security interests extend beyond the south.

Beit Jinn, located near Jabal al-Sheikh and approximately 55 kilometers from Damascus, has been a frequent target. In late November, a previous raid in the area resulted in the deaths of 13 civilians. The repeated strikes underscore the volatile security situation in southwestern Syria.

The Syrian foreign ministry's statement emphasized that this latest attack "comes in the context of repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory." This highlights a pattern of Israeli actions that Syria views as a direct challenge to its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Israel's stated objective in these strikes is typically to counter perceived threats, particularly those involving Iran-backed forces and advanced weaponry. The designation of the target as a "terrorist" by the Israeli military directly contradicts Syria's assertion that a "civilian vehicle" was hit.

The differing accounts of the incident—one describing a targeted military operation and the other a civilian casualty—underscore the challenges in verifying information from the conflict zone.
