Isaias has intensified into the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season, with sustained winds of 80 mph, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The storm is projected to strengthen further to a Category 2 hurricane before making landfall along the U.S. northern Gulf Coast on Friday.

This year's Atlantic hurricane season has been unusually quiet, largely attributed to a strong El Niño. The late formation of the season's first hurricane is notable; the last time a first hurricane formed this late was on October 8, 1905, predating modern satellite tracking capabilities.

Isaias is expected to bring significant rainfall, with estimates ranging from 75-150 mm (2.9-5.9 inches) across the Gulf Coast, and potentially up to 250 mm in some areas. This precipitation raises the risk of flash flooding and isolated river flooding.

The NOAA has also warned of a growing likelihood of life-threatening storm surge along parts of the northern Gulf Coast. Additionally, damaging hurricane-force winds are anticipated to impact the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, and Mississippi.

A hurricane warning is in effect, urging residents to prepare for potential long-term power outages and to heed any evacuation orders issued by local authorities. Preparations are underway in coastal communities, with some residents seen boarding up homes and collecting sandbags.

The late start to hurricane activity has been a surprising feature of the 2026 season. Experts noted that the period before the satellite era (which began in the 1960s) saw fewer recorded hurricanes, partly because storms that did not make landfall were less likely to be detected and cataloged.

Residents in the projected path are being advised to secure their properties and have emergency supplies ready. Emergency management agencies are coordinating response efforts and monitoring the storm's trajectory closely.

While the focus is on Hurricane Isaias, severe weather has impacted other regions. In Zimbabwe, a state of disaster was declared in Masvingo province due to a severe hailstorm that damaged thousands of homes and critical infrastructure, disrupting power and drainage systems as the rainy season begins.
