Devastating floods in India's northeastern Assam state, described by survivors as a "tsunami," have claimed the lives of over 100 people and displaced approximately 700,000 individuals. The catastrophic event, which occurred between July 18 and July 20, saw rivers swell due to incessant rains in the neighboring Naga Hills of Nagaland, leading to widespread destruction.

The floods disproportionately impacted eastern Assam, also known as Upper Assam, a region typically less affected by monsoon inundation than northern and western parts of the state. Heavy rainfall in Nagaland districts bordering Upper Assam triggered numerous landslides, with the intense run-off swelling rivers originating in the Naga Hills. This surge caused immense devastation downstream, submerging villages and destroying homes and agricultural land.

Survivors recount harrowing experiences, including Debiram Panika, a daily wage labourer who lost his wife and younger daughter when their home was swept away by the Dikhow River. His wife's last words, heard over a video call amidst panic, were "This is it for us. We are going to die," before the connection was lost. While his elder daughter was rescued, his four-year-old daughter's body remains missing.

The scale of destruction is immense, with the floods destroying an estimated 2,700 villages and submerging vast swathes of rice fields, the primary source of livelihood for many. Tens of thousands of tree trunks and debris carried by the floodwaters litter areas where homes once stood, painting a grim picture of the aftermath. The state government estimates that 1.2 million people have been impacted in total.

This year's flooding pattern marks a significant deviation from the norm. While Assam typically experiences monsoon floods, the intensity and the source of the overflow from neighboring Nagaland have presented a new challenge. Experts are examining the potential role of changing weather patterns and increased rainfall in the Naga Hills in exacerbating these riverine floods.
