A 41-year-old Salvadoran migrant, Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, died over the weekend following a medical emergency while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at the Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark, New Jersey. Federal officials confirmed the death on Monday.

Lopez-Cornejo was arrested on June 18 in Plainfield, New Jersey, and was being held pending removal from the United States under a reinstatement of a prior removal order. ICE stated that he received proper medical care and was seen by medical professionals while in their custody.

According to ICE, Lopez-Cornejo was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead on Saturday. The official cause of death is currently pending. An immigration advocacy group, citing a woman who identified herself as Lopez-Cornejo’s mother, Maria Cornejo, reported that her son took medication for seizures, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Maria Cornejo stated that her son had reported numbness in his right side and hand during their last conversation on Friday and was scheduled for further tests. She expressed her grief and a desire for justice, emphasizing the pain of losing her son.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill expressed her disturbance over the death and stated that her administration is working with the congressional delegation to investigate the circumstances. She extended her condolences to the individual's loved ones, who she said deserve answers.

U.S. Representative Rob Menendez stated that Lopez-Cornejo had complained of difficulties on Saturday before collapsing at the facility. CPR was administered before he was transported to the hospital. Menendez indicated that his office would be requesting medical information, which ICE had not immediately provided.

Lopez-Cornejo had reportedly been in the United States for 20 years. ICE confirmed that he had entered the country illegally.

The Delaney Hall Detention Facility has previously been the site of protests regarding conditions, including a hunger strike by detainees, with the Mayor of Newark having previously withdrawn police presence from the area.
